DRUG TYPES AND THEIR EFFECTS

It is helpful to know the categories of drugs when preparing
for caring for drug-exposed infants.
Following is a drug primer by classification including their common names.

SPECIFIC DRUGS

Stimulants

Amphetamines, cocaine, crack, tobacco

Hallucinogens

Marijuana, LSD, PCP, peyote/mescaline

Depressants

Alcohol, barbiturates, tranquilizers, Qualudes

Inhalants

Glue, nail polish remover, gasoline

Opiates

Heroin, methadone, opium

Psychotropic Prescription Drugs for Psychiatric Disorders

Haloperidol, chlorpromazine, thioridazine

Prescription Drugs

       Morphine, Oxycodone, OxyCotin, Vicodin                          

Drug Effects on the Body

 Stimulants:

Increase the activity of the heart and provide a temporary sense of well-being.

Hallucinogens:

Excite the brain with resulting mood changes and even short-term insanity.

Depressants:

Act on the central nervous system to produce both euphoria and drowsiness.

 Inhalants:

Alter the mind to give a brief feeling of euphoria

Opiates:

Reduces the sensation of pain and gives a feeling of well-being.

Psychotropic / Prescription Drugs for Psychiatric Disorders:

Are used to treat emotional, mental and metabolic disorders.
