PLANNED GIVING

A Planned Gift to PICC is an investment in the future of babies born in Washington State every year with prenatal exposures to illicit drugs.  Without intervention and expert care, these innocent victims of drug abuse can suffer life-threatening effects of withdrawal, failure to thrive, abuse, and neglect.   PICC is here for them - offering specialized care and a safe and healthy start for a better life.

When You Plan for Your Own Family...Remember Our Babies, Too

All of us want to provide a secure future for ourselves and the people we love, and all of us would like to leave the world a little better than we found it.  Estate planning is a critical tool for turning those wishes into reality.   If you haven’t already planned for you family’s future, we urge you to take the time to do so now.

Estate planning allows you to make provisions for the present and future management of the property you have accumulated.  It means that you, and not the state, will decide how you want it distributed when you no longer need it.  It means that you can provide for your heirs according to their needs, provide for the guardianship of your minor children, and remember friends or charitable causes that are dear to you.

If the prospect of estate planning seems a bit overwhelming, start with the “4 Ps”

People:  Make a list of the people you would like to provide for in your plan.  This might include family members, friends, and charitable interests.

Property:  Make a list of your property, including investments, real estate, retirement plans, life insurance assets, and personal property.

Plan:  Make a plan, looking for opportunities to match your property with the needs of your people.

Planners:  Make a list of the planners you need to help you.  This might include your attorney, accountant, financial planner, bank trust officer, or other trusted advisor.

If sharing with those less fortunate is an important value to you and your family, making a charitable gift as part of your estate planning is a way of passing that value on to your heirs.

In times when many are concerned abut out-living their assets, a planned gift is also a way for many individuals to leave a larger gift than they would be able to make outright.  If you have ever thought, “I wish I could give more,” planned giving may allow you to achieve that gift without jeopardizing your future.

Planned charitable gifts can also provide a number of significant tax benefits, including income tax deductions, savings on capital gains taxes, and avoidance of estate taxes.  You should always discuss tax and other financial implications of a gift with your attorney or financial advisor.

Here are some kinds of planned gifts you might like to consider:

Bequests:   A simple provision or amendment to your will can provide a specific dollar amount, a specific property, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder that is left after remembering your loved ones.

Life Insurance:  One way to make a significant gift is to name a charity as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy that is no longer needed for its original purpose.

Retirement Plans:  By designating a charity as the recipient of surplus or remaining retirement funds, you may avoid both income and estate taxes.

Living Trusts: You can direct that at the termination of a living trust, a portion of the assets remaining will be used for charitable purposes.

Gifts of real estate, securities or other assets you no longer need.
