Infants affected by prenatal drug exposure need immediate, short-term intervention to give them a safe and healthy start in life. They need to be protected from dangerous environments like meth labs and from the abuse and neglect that often result from parental drug involvement. Let your lawmakers know that you support PICC and the right of drug-exposed newborns to be identified, supported, and protected. What drug-exposed infants and children don’t need is to be stigmatized. The negative stereotypes of “crack babies” or “drug babies” popularized a generation ago have proved not to be true. At PICC, we have long believed that the caregiver is the make or break factor in these children’s lives. PICC’s graduates, many of them now teen-agers, are living proof that these children can do very well. It’s up to us to give them the healthy start and the safe environment all children need to grow. |
